The start of 2025 saw resumption of full capacity mining activities at the Montepuez Ruby mines in Mozambique, following 2024’s civil unrest in the north of the country which disrupted mining activities and lead to an 80% reduction in exports.
Shortages of ruby and associated price hikes are hopefully over although the situation underscores the complex interplay between political stability and resource extraction.
The unrest has not only affected mining operations but also the local communities, leading to displacement and economic hardship.
